Indonesian’s economy faces various challenges, both domestically and globally in 2025. Although, the government has targeted 8% economic growth, various indicators point to a significant slowdown. However, the factors such as global trade tensions, declining domestic consumption, and tight fiscal policy are major obstacles to achieving this target. So, are what is the important things of economics ambitions in Indonesia?

Global Economic Conditions and Their Impact on Indonesia

The global economic growth is projected to slow 2.3% in 2025, it downs from 2,8% from the previous year. However, this decline is due to escalating trade transitions and protectionist policies, particularly from the United States, which has imposed high tariffs on various countries, including China.

In addition, these policies have negatively impacted the global supply chain and reduced export demand from developing countries like Indonesia. Furthermore, global commodity prices are projected to fall 12% by 2025, returning to pre-COVID-19 levels. While this price decline may help lower inflation and it also reduces revenues for commodity-exporting countries, including Indonesia.

Slowing Domestic Economic Growth

The newest data shows that Indonesia’s economic growth in the first quarter of 2025 reached only 4.87% annually, the lowest since the third quarter of 2021. So, this slowdown was caused by weakening household consumption, which grew only 4.89%, as well as a decline in investment and government spending.

In addition, domestic consumption which contributes more than 50% of GDP, it was pressured by the increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) to 12% and the government’s budget austerity policies. These policies, while aimed at fiscal efficiency and it has the potential to reduce people’s purchasing power and slow economic growth.

Structural and Social Challenges

In addition to economic factors, Indonesia also faces structural challenges such as dependence on commodity exports and a lack of industrial diversification. However, in this reliance on exports to China makes Indonesia vulnerable to fluctuations in demand from that country. The social phenomenon indicates a potential brain drain, where skilled workers choose to work abroad, which can reduce domestic productivity and innovation.

Future Opportunities and Strategies

Despite facing various challenges, Indonesia has opportunities to strengthen its economy through investment in renewable energy and digitalization. As a major nickel producer, Indonesia can capitalize on global demand for electric vehicle batteries. Furthermore, digital transformation can increase efficiency and create new jobs.

For your information, to capitalize on these opportunities, policies that support innovation, investment, and improving the quality of human resources are needed in this situation.

So, Indonesian’s economic condition in 2025 show a significant slowdown due to global pressures and domestic challenges. Indonesia needs to address structural challenges, improve industrial competitiveness, capitalize on opportunities, and it is to achieving sustainable growth. Appropriate policies and collaboration between the government, the private sector, and civil society are key to addressing these challenges.
